[Explanation of Congee Efficacy] The traditional Chinese medicine “doukou” (cardamom) can be divided into nutmeg, white cardamom, and round cardamom. Nutmeg is the seed of the Myristicaceae plant, widely cultivated in tropical regions and distributed in places such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brazil. It has a strong aromatic odor, a spicy and slightly bitter taste, and is warm in nature and non-toxic. The best quality nutmeg is large, heavy, firm, and highly fragrant. White cardamom and round cardamom belong to the Zingiberaceae family but have similar functions and can therefore be used interchangeably.
Although nutmeg is produced abroad, ancient Chinese medical practitioners knew of its medicinal value very early on. It is said to have the functions of warming the middle-jiao, descending qi, promoting digestion, and consolidating the intestines. It is used to supports abdominal distension and pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and indigestion. According to the Treatise on the Properties of Medicinal Herbs, nutmeg “supports indigestion of overnight food.” The Japanese Herbal (Rihua Zi Bencao) states: “It regulates the middle-jiao, descends qi, stops diarrhea and dysentery, stimulates the appetite, and promotes digestion.” The Kaibao Bencao records: “It warms the middle-jiao, supports cold accumulation causing abdominal distension and pain, cholera with aversion to evil influences, vomiting of frothy saliva, cold qi, promotes digestion, and stops diarrhea.” The Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Jing Shu) also refers to it as “an essential medicine for regulating the Spleen, stimulating the appetite, eliminating indigestion of overnight food, and stopping diarrhea.” Research has shown that a small amount of nutmeg can promote gastric juice secretion and intestinal peristalsis, thereby facilitating the digestion and absorption of food. When cooked with rice to make porridge, it can enhance the therapeutic effect on wellness caused by deficiency-cold of the Spleen and stomach. As early as in the Song Dynasty, the Sheng Ji Zong Lu, Volume 188, Dietary Therapy Section, records: “For supports post-typhoid deficiency-cold of the Spleen and stomach, vomiting, and inability to eat, there is a recipe for nutmeg porridge. Take one nutmeg, remove the shell, and grind it into a powder separately; wash two sheng of polished round-grained rice clean. For these two ingredients, first cook the polished round-grained rice into thin porridge as usual. After it is cooked, add the nutmeg powder, stir well, and take it immediately.” Especially for children with weak gastrointestinal function, using porridge instead of medicine, combining porridge and medicine, supports while eating, and incorporating supports into the diet can achieve satisfactory therapeutic effects.
[Precautions] Nutmeg porridge is suitable for patients with deficiency-cold conditions and should not be selected for those with excess-heat syndromes or a yin-deficiency with excessive fire constitution. Generally, a course of supports lasts 3 to 5 days, and the porridge should be taken warm in the morning and evening. The dosage of nutmeg should not be excessive, as a large amount can have an inhibitory effect on the gastrointestinal tract.
