Shuiweng Flower

Shuiwenghua is the name of a traditional Chinese medicine. It consists of the flower buds of Shuiweng, a plant in the Myrtaceae family. From late May to early June, flowering branches bearing buds are harvested, moistened with water, and stacked for 3–5 days to allow the buds to fall off naturally. The buds are then sun-dried until they are about 30% dry, stacked and left to ferment for 1–2 days, and sun-dried again. This process of sun-drying for one day followed by fermentation for one day is repeated until fully dry, after which any remaining twigs and stems are sifted out. It has a bitter, slightly sweet taste and a cool nature.It can clear heat and eliminate toxins, relieve summer heat and promote fluid production, and relieve food stagnation and promote diuresis.

Processing Methods

Moisten with water, pile up for 3–5 days to allow the flower buds to fall off naturally, sun-dry until 30% dry, then pile and cover for 1–2 days before sun-drying again. Repeat this cycle of one day of sun-drying followed by one day of covering until fully dry. Finally, sift to remove any remaining stems and branches.

Morphological Characteristics

Shuiweng is a tree that can grow up to 15 m tall. Its dried flower buds are ovate or spherical, pointed at both ends, 4–7 mm long, and 2–4 mm in diameter.The calyx tube is inversely bell-shaped or cup-shaped, brown to brownish-black, wrinkled on the outside, with more than four longitudinal ridges protruding; upon removal of the cap-like structure, overlapping stamens are visible, with brownish-black filaments and a conical style in the center. The texture is dry and hard. It has a faintly fragrant odor and a bitter taste. It thrives in a warm, sunny, and humid climate and is commonly found near water.
