Commentary

With white ginseng as the sovereign, of warm nature and sweet, slightly bitter flavor, entering the Spleen, Lung, Heart, Kidney, it greatly tonifies yuan qi, restores collapse and generates fluids, and this opening sets the main therapeutic direction. The ministerial layer, ham (with warm nature and sweet, salty flavor, having Spleen, Stomach, Kidney tropism, tonifies qi and blood and invigorates the spleen), and fresh clear broth (of neutral nature and sweet flavor, entering the Spleen, Stomach, nourishes the stomach, generates fluid, and harmonizes), lends support that reinforces the sovereign’s main effect. Completing the formula, chicken fat, rich in blood-and-flesh essence, nourishing the righteous qi, and quail eggs, rich in blood-and-flesh essence, nourishing the righteous qi, so that potency is moderated and stomach qi protected. Together the herbs converge on this action, in accord with the qi-yin pattern.
