Related Compatibility

1. Forsythia combined with Zhebei Mother-of-Pearl: Forsythia excels at clearing heat, eliminating toxins, reducing swelling, and dispersing nodules; Zhebei Mother-of-Pearl excels at clearing heat, transforming phlegm, relieving stagnation, and dispersing nodules. When used together, these two herbs synergistically clear heat, eliminate toxins, reduce swelling, transform phlegm, soften hardness, and disperse nodules. This combination is suitable for scrofula, phlegm nodules, and goiters caused by stagnation of phlegm-fire, as well as wheezing and coughing due to phlegm-heat stagnation in the lungs.

2. Forsythia combined with Gardenia: Forsythia is light, clear, and ascending; it excels at dispersing heat in the Upper Jiao, purging heart fire, expelling toxins, and dispersing blood stasis and qi stagnation in various meridians. By clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling, and dispersing nodules, it is known as the “sacred herb for skin ulcers”;Gardenia is bitter and cold in nature, with a descending action; it excels at purging fire pathogens from the Three Jiao, clearing the heart to relieve restlessness, cooling the blood, and detoxifying. It is an essential herb for treating feverish conditions characterized by mental agitation and restlessness. When used in combination, the effects of cooling the blood, detoxifying, clearing the heart, and relieving restlessness are enhanced. This formula is indicated for high fever and mental confusion caused by heat invading the pericardium in warm diseases; restlessness, dark urine, and mouth and tongue sores due to heat in the Heart Meridian; and heat-toxin sores and ulcers.

Medicinal Identification

1. Forsythia and Honeysuckle: Both herbs excel at clearing heat and detoxifying, while also dispersing wind-heat.They are often used in combination for conditions such as exogenous wind-heat, the early stages of warm diseases, and heat-toxin sores and abscesses. However, Forsythia has a stronger ability to clear the heart and eliminate toxins, and excels at resolving abscesses and dispersing nodules; it is a premier herb for treating skin ulcers and is also used for scrofula and phlegm nodules. Honeysuckle, on the other hand, is particularly effective at dispersing exterior heat, and when stir-fried and charred, it excels at cooling the blood and stopping dysentery, making it suitable for treating heat-toxin bloody dysentery.

2. Purified Forsythia and Forsythia Heart: Both can clear heat, resolve toxins, dissipate abscesses, and disperse nodules, and are primarily used to treat conditions such as abscesses, swellings, skin infections, and the early stages of warm diseases. However, purified forsythia is bitter, cold, light, and ascending; it can disperse pathogenic heat from both the exterior and interior to resolve exterior syndromes and clear heat, while also possessing the ability to resolve abscesses and disperse nodules. It is primarily used to treat abscesses, swellings, and toxic sores; scrofula and phlegm-nodules; exogenous wind-heat; and the early stages of warm diseases. In contrast, Forsythia Heart specifically enters the Heart and Pericardium meridians, primarily clearing Heart fire and removing heat from the Pericardium; therefore, it is frequently used for warm diseases where heat has invaded the Pericardium, high fever with mental confusion and delirium, and painful, scanty urination due to heat.

Processing & Preparation

Harvesting & Processing

Harvest in autumn when the fruits are just ripening and still green; remove impurities, steam until tender, and sun-dry; this is commonly known as “green forsythia” (Qingqiao). Harvest when the fruits are fully ripe, sun-dry, and remove impurities; this is commonly known as “ripe forsythia” (Laoqiao). After harvesting green forsythia, steam it immediately until tender, sun-dry it, and sift out the seeds to obtain “forsythia seeds” (Lianqiao Xin) for use.

Processing Methods

1. Forsythia: Take the raw herb, remove impurities and fruit stalks, rinse thoroughly with running water, and sun-dry. Sift out any loose seeds and ash residue.

2. Cinnabar-coated Forsythia: Take the cleaned Forsythia, moisten it with water, place it in a container, and stir evenly. Sprinkle cinnabar powder evenly over it and mix lightly, then remove and air-dry. Use 2 kg of cinnabar powder for every 100 kg of Forsythia.

3. Charred Forsythia: Place the cleaned Forsythia in a pot and roast over high heat until it turns 70–80% black. Remove and allow to cool completely.

Storage Methods

Store in a dry container in a well-ventilated, dry place. Ensure the charred Forsythia is allowed to cool promptly to prevent reignition.

Distribution Area

Distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, and other regions.

Growth Habits

It prefers a warm, humid climate. It is highly adaptable, tolerant of cold and poor soil. It thrives in full sun. It is not particular about soil type and can grow in both humus-rich soil and sandy gravelly soil.

Propagation Methods

Propagated by seeds, layering, and cuttings.

Cultivation Techniques

1. Seed Propagation: Sow seeds in late March to early April in northern regions, and in early to mid-March in southern regions. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water at 50°C for 10–12 hours; remove, air-dry, and then sow. Alternatively, stratify the seeds in moist sand from September to October and sow the following spring to improve germination rates.Space rows about 30 cm apart and cover seeds with 1–2 cm of soil. Cover with straw to keep the soil moist. Thin the seedlings when they reach 15–20 cm in height, spacing them 10 cm apart, and apply manure or livestock slurry as a top dressing. Transplant in the fall of the same year or in early spring of the following year.

2. Layering Propagation: Before the rainy season begins, bend a long, current-year shoot from the mother plant downward and bury it 3–4 cm deep in the soil near the mother plant. Water thoroughly and keep the area consistently moist; transplant in early spring of the following year.

3. Propagation by Cuttings: After the leaves fall in the fall or before bud break in early spring, select healthy 1- to 2-year-old branches. Cut sections approximately 20 cm long, leaving only the top 2–3 leaves and removing all others.Plant them in a seedbed with a spacing of 25 cm × 15 cm, leaving 1–2 nodes exposed above the soil surface. Water immediately after planting and keep the soil consistently moist. Begin fertilizing 20–30 days after the cuttings have taken root, applying fertilizer 3–4 times; the plants can be transplanted in the same year. When transplanting, dig holes spaced 2 m × 1.5 m apart and apply a small amount of well-rotted compost or manure. Ensure the roots spread out naturally during planting, then cover with soil and firm it down. Forsythia has a very low fruit-setting rate; to improve this, plants with long styles and those with short styles must be interplanted during transplanting.

Pest and Disease Control

Diseases include damping-off; pests include cutworms and others.
