Morphological Characteristics
A tree reaching up to 10 m in height; the entire plant exudes a milky sap. The bark is dark purple and peels off in thin strips; young branches are covered with slightly appressed soft hairs. Simple leaves are alternate and arranged in two rows; petioles are 1–2.2 cm long and short-hairy; stipules are linear or narrowly triangular, about 2 mm long, hairy, and leave a scar after falling off;leaf blades are elliptic or obovate-oblong, 7–22 cm long and 3–8.5 cm wide, with an acuminate or shortly acuminate apex, a cuneate base, and entire margins; young leaves are often shallowly pinnately lobed; the upper surface is glabrous and glossy, while the lower surface is densely covered with grayish-white short tomentum; there are 7–9 pairs of primary veins, which interweave with fine veins to form a reticulate venation that is prominent on the underside.Flowers are unisexual, with male and female flowers on the same plant; male inflorescences are solitary and axillary, obovate or club-shaped, 1.5–2 cm long, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, with a peduncle 1–2 cm long, covered with short, pale gray pubescence; male flowers have 4 separate perianth segments, linear or spatulate, 1 mm long, densely covered with fine pubescence;There is a single stamen with a long-elliptic filament and an elliptic anther. The aggregate fruit is nearly spherical, 3–4 cm in diameter, yellow, turning brown when dry, covered with short hairs, and bearing indistinct, persistent lactiferous projections on the surface; the sepals are separated near the axis, numbering about 12 at fruiting; the fruit stalk is 3.5–6.5 cm long and covered with short soft hairs.Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer; fruiting occurs in autumn.
