Commentary

Royal jelly (Feng-wang-jiang) serves as the monarch (chief) herb. Sweet-neutral in property, it travels through the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians, and works to tonify qi and nourish yin. Cyperus rhizome (Xiang-fu) joins as the supporting deputy; neutral and pungent, slightly bitter, slightly sweet in character, it travels through the Liver, Spleen, Triple Burner meridians to soothe the liver, regulate qi, regulate menstruation and relieve pain. Tangerine peel (Chen-pi) adds further support, working to regulate qi and resolve phlegm. Green tangerine peel (Qing-pi) (soothe the liver and break qi), joined by wood fragrant (Mu-xiang) (move qi and relieve pain), handle subsidiary symptoms and temper the main action. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Collectively, the combination relieve liver stagnation, regulate qi, harmonize the stomach, alleviate pain, addressing the liver qi and qi pattern responsible for epigastric distension and pain that moves erratically, pain that eases after belching or passing gas.
