Commentary
Freeze-dried royal jelly powder acts as the chief herb. Sweet-neutral in property, its action follows the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians, and works to tonify qi and nourish yin. Albizia bark (He-huan-pi) stands in the deputy (minister) seat; neutral and sweet in character, it travels through the Heart, Liver, Lung meridians to soothe the liver, calm the spirit and activate blood. Cyperus rhizome (Xiang-fu) reinforces this deputy action, working to soothe the liver, regulate qi, regulate menstruation and relieve pain. Assisting the core, tangerine peel (Chen-pi) acts as an assistant ingredient, helping to regulate qi and resolve phlegm. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Taken together these herbs regulate qi, relieve depression, calm the mind, promote sleep, in keeping with the insomnia pattern.
