30 grams of black soybeans, 30 grams of raw rehmannia root, and 20 grams of rock sugar.

How To Make

Place the raw rehmannia root in a pot, add water, and simmer to make a decoction. Strain out the solids, add the black beans, and simmer until tender. Stir in crushed rock sugar until dissolved, then serve.

Efficacy

Nourishes yin and stops sweating. Suitable for spontaneous excessive sweating due to yin deficiency, characterized by sweating on the head, neck, chest, back, or throughout the body during sleep; waking easily due to sweating; restlessness and body heat; thirst and a dry throat; red lips; or afternoon hot flashes; a red tongue; and a fine, rapid pulse.

Usage

Consume in the morning and evening.

Commentary

Taking raw rehmannia root (Sheng-di) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet, bitter flavor and cold property: it channels into the Heart, Liver, Kidney meridians and works to clear heat, cool blood, nourish yin and generate fluids. Black soybeans (Hei-dou) join as the supporting deputy, sweet-neutral in property, acting through the Kidney, Spleen meridians to tonify the kidney, nourish blood and promote urination. Finally, rock sugar (Bing-tang) functions as the harmonizing (envoy) ingredient; its role is to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Collectively, the combination nourish yin and stop sweating, addressing the yin deficiency and yin pattern responsible for sweating on the head, neck.
