Formula

15 grams of Chuanxiong, 30 grams of Yanhusuo, 30 grams of Red Peony Root, 30 grams of White Peony Root, and 30 grams of honey.

How To Make

Remove impurities from the Chuanxiong, Yanhusuo, Red Peony Root, and White Peony Root, wash them thoroughly, sun-dry or oven-dry them, then slice or chop them. Place all ingredients in a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of water, and decoct twice for 20 minutes each time. Combine the filtered decoctions from both batches, stir in the honey, and mix well to complete.

Efficacy

Promotes blood circulation and dispels blood stasis. Indicated for migraine of the blood stasis type, characterized by a long-standing, persistent migraine with a fixed location of pain, a dull complexion, a dark purple tongue, and a fine,涩 pulse.

Usage

Take one dose in the morning and one in the evening.

Commentary

Chuanxiong (Chuan-xiong) stands as the primary (chief) herb; warm and pungent in character, it travels through the Liver, Gallbladder, Pericardium meridians, working chiefly to activate blood, move qi, dispel wind and relieve pain. Yanhusuo (Yan-hu-suo) joins as the supporting deputy, pungent, bitter-warm in property, acting through the Liver, Spleen meridians to activate blood, move qi and relieve pain. Red Peony Root (Chi-shao) reinforces this deputy action, working to clear heat, cool blood, activate blood to disperse stasis. Assisting the core, White Peony Root (Bai-shao) serves as a supporting (assistant) herb, helping to nourish blood, soften the liver, restrains yin and alleviate pain. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Working as one, the formula promote blood circulation and dispel blood stasis, thereby targeting the blood pattern that underlies the complaint.
