Commentary
Taking trumpet vine flowers (Ling-xiao-hua) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its slightly bitter flavor and cold property: it channels into the Liver meridians and works to clear heat, cool blood and activate blood. Jasmine flowers (Mo-li-hua) join as the supporting deputy. Pungent, sweet-warm in property, it enters the Liver, Spleen, Stomach meridians and works to regulate qi, relieve depression and harmonize the middle. Chuanxiong (Chuan-xiong) adds further support, working to activate blood, move qi, dispel wind and relieve pain. Safflower (Hong-hua) acts as an assistant ingredient, acting to activate blood, unblock menstruation and resolve stasis, thus refining the overall action. Tea leaves (Cha-ye) act as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to clear heat, refresh and aid digestion and unite the separate actions into one. Taken together these herbs regulate qi and relieve chest tightness, in keeping with the coronary artery disease pattern.
