Commentary
Bee pollen (Hua-fen) assumes the leading (chief) role. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Spleen, Lung meridians, and works to tonify qi and nourish. Green tangerine peel (Qing-pi) joins as the supporting deputy. Bitter, pungent-warm in property, it enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Stomach meridians and works to soothe the liver and break qi. Safflower (Hong-hua) adds further support, working to activate blood, unblock menstruation and resolve stasis. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. In sum, the prescription promote the flow of qi and blood and soften blood vessels, aimed squarely at the blood and qi pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
