Commentary
Taking safflower (Hong-hua) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its pungent flavor and warm property: its action follows the Heart, Liver meridians and works to activate blood, unblock menstruation and resolve stasis. Peach kernels (Tao-ren) take the deputy (minister) role. Bitter, sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Heart, Liver, Large Intestine meridians and works to activate blood, resolve stasis and moisten the intestines. Rose blossoms (Mei-gui-hua) add further support, working to regulate qi, relieve depression and activate blood. Finally, japonica rice (Geng-mi) stands as the harmonizing envoy; its role is to harmonize the middle, tonify qi and stop diarrhea and coordinate the herbs. In sum, the prescription promote blood circulation and support conception, aimed squarely at the blood pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
