Commentary
Perilla seeds (Zi-su-zi) assume the leading (chief) role; warm and pungent in character, its action follows the Lung, Large Intestine meridians, working chiefly to descend qi, resolve phlegm, relieve cough and wheezing, moisten the intestines. Mulberry bark (Sang-bai-pi) stands in the deputy (minister) seat, sweet-cold in property, acting through the Lung meridians to purge lung heat, relieve wheezing and reduce edema. Finally, white sugar (Bai-tang) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to moisten and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. In sum, the prescription clear the lungs and resolve phlegm, aimed squarely at the phlegm-heat and phlegm pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
