Formula

15 grams of Salvia miltiorrhiza, 9 grams of sandalwood, 3 grams of fried licorice, and 30 grams of honey.

How To Make

Place the Danshen, sandalwood, and fried licorice root in a clay pot, add water, and simmer. Strain out the solids, keep the liquid, and stir in the honey to complete.

Efficacy

Promotes blood circulation and dispels blood stasis. Suitable for rheumatic heart disease of the “stagnation of blood in the heart meridians” type, characterized by palpitations and restlessness, dizziness and fatigue, bluish-gray lips and nails, purplish-red cheeks, chest tightness and heart pain, coughing, and in severe cases, hemoptysis; the tongue may appear dark red, bluish-purple, or have ecchymoses; the pulse may be fine and rapid or irregular.

Usage

Consume in two equal portions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Commentary

Salvia miltiorrhiza (Dan-shen) acts as the chief herb. Bitter-slightly cold in property, it travels through the Heart, Liver meridians, and works to activate blood, resolve stasis, cool blood and calm the heart. Sandalwood (Tan-xiang) takes the deputy (minister) role. Pungent-warm in property, it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Heart meridians and works to regulate qi, warm the middle and relieve pain. Finally, fried licorice (Zhi Gan-cao) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to tonify qi and harmonize the actions of all herbs and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs promote blood circulation and dispel blood stasis, in keeping with the blood pattern and its manifestations such as palpitations and restlessness, dizziness and fatigue.
