Pharmacological Actions
The protein BAP-1 in the leaves of this plant exhibits a 76.7% inhibition rate against the TMV virus at a concentration of 10 μg/ml; the ferulic acid contained in the roots of this plant can inhibit ADP- and collagen-induced platelet aggregation in rats at concentrations of 0.4–0.6 mg/ml;using tritium-labeled 5-hydroxytryptamine-labeled platelets, sodium ferulic acid at concentrations of 1–2 mg/ml significantly inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation and suppresses the release of ³H-5-HT from platelets. The related species B. spectabilis exhibits antimicrobial activity; its leaves contain inositol monomethyl ester, which has antidiabetic effects, reducing blood glucose levels in rats by 38.20% 12 hours after a 200 mg/kg oral administration.

Flowers typically grow in clusters of three within the bracts; the flower stalks are fused with the midribs of the bracts. The bracts are leaf-like, dark red or purple, elliptical, 3–3.5 cm long, and papery. The perianth tube is 1.5–2 cm long, pale green, sparsely pubescent, and ridged; there are 6–8 stamens, and the ovary is 5-ridged.
Botanical Information
Botanical Classification
Purple Jasmine Family, Purple Triangle.
Morphological Characteristics
A climbing shrub. Stems stout; branches pendulous, glabrous or sparsely pubescent; thorns axillary, 5–15 mm long. Leaves papery, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 5–13 cm long, 3–6 cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, upper surface glabrous, lower surface finely pubescent; petiole 1 cm long.Flowers are borne within three bracts at the tips of branches; the pedicels are adnate to the midveins of the bracts, with one flower per bract; the bracts are leaf-like, purple or magenta, oblong or elliptic, 2.5–3.5 cm long, about 2 cm wide, papery; The perianth tube is about 2 cm long, pale green, sparsely pubescent, ridged, and shallowly 5-lobed at the apex; there are 6–8 stamens; the style is lateral, linear, with margins expanded into thin lamellae, and the stigma is acute; the disk is fused at the base into a ring and lacerated at the upper part. Flowering occurs in winter and spring (in Guangzhou, Hainan, and Kunming); in northern greenhouses, it blooms from March to July.
Distribution Area
Distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and Yunnan.
Growth Habits
Prefers warm, humid environments with strong sunlight.
Propagation Methods
Propagation is primarily by cuttings.
Cultivation Techniques
It requires fertile soil rich in humus. Propagation is primarily by cuttings. This can be done from May to August, with the highest survival rate in May. Select plump, semi-lignified shoots from the current year as cuttings. After planting, maintain high humidity and a temperature of around 28°C; roots will form within 20 days, and the cuttings can be transplanted after 30 days. Maintain a temperature of 5–15°C during winter.
