Benefits
Promotes bowel movements, moistens dryness, softens hardness, clears heat, and reduces swelling.
Indications
Excess heat and food stagnation; abdominal fullness, distension, and pain; dry, hard stools; and swollen, painful intestinal abscesses; for external use, treats swollen and painful breast abscesses and hemorrhoids.
Usage and Dosage
1. Internal use: Decoct 10–15 g; or grind into a powder and mix with medicinal juice or boiled water; or incorporate into pills. 2. External use: Apply as a powder poultice; or dissolve in water and instill into the eyes; or decoct and use for fumigation or washing.
Precautions
1. Use with caution in pregnant women. 2. Combining芒硝 with sulfur may cause severe intestinal spasms and laxative reactions, or even lead to sulfide poisoning; their concurrent use is contraindicated. 3. The silica, calcium oxide, and essential oils contained in三棱 may react chemically with芒硝, altering the original pharmacological properties of both drugs; they should not be used together. 4. Avoid using with Kushen; Da Huang serves as a guide herb. 5. Should not be used in combination with anticholinergic drugs such as atropine.
Chemical Constituents
It primarily contains sodium sulfate. It also contains impurities such as table salt, calcium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate.
Pharmacological Actions
This product has laxative, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects.
Relevant Discussions
1. *Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica*: “It dispels pathogenic factors of cold and heat, expels accumulations, hardened masses, and retained masses from the six viscera, and can transform seventy-two types of mineral deposits.”
2. *Compendium of Materia Medica*: “The *Inner Canon* states: ‘The salty taste descends and drains, belonging to Yin.’ It further states: ‘The salty softens; when heat runs rampant internally, treat it with salty and cold substances. For hardened masses, use the salty to soften them; for intense heat, use the cold to dispel it.’ Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing’s Major Chest-Relieving Decoction, Major Chengqi Decoction, and Stomach-Regulating Chengqi Decoction all use芒硝 to soften hardness and eliminate stagnant heat.”
3. *The Interpretation of Medicinal Properties*: “Mangxiao has a salty taste that softens hardness, so it can relieve dry, hard blockages; its cold nature descends and drains, so it can eliminate fire and dryness. It is primarily used to treat epidemic fever with mania, pathogenic heat in the six fu organs, heat in the upper jiao (diaphragm), or hard stools in the lower jiao.”
Applications
Clinical Applications
1. To treat real heat and food stagnation, as well as dry, hard stools, it is often used in synergy with rhubarb, as in the Major Decongestant Decoction (Treatise on Cold Damage).
2. To treat swelling and pain in the throat and sores on the mouth and tongue, it can be ground into a powder with borax and borneol and applied to the affected area, as in the Borneol-Borax Powder (Authentic Treatise on Surgery).
3. To treat redness, swelling, and pain in the eyes, dissolve this herb in water and apply it to the eyes, or decoct it to make a solution for steam therapy or washing.
4. To treat swollen and painful hemorrhoids, decoct it in water alone and use the solution for local steam therapy or washing.
5. To treat the early stages of intestinal abscess, pound it into a paste with rhubarb and garlic and apply externally.
Related Compatibility
1. Mirabilite combined with Rhubarb: Mirabilite is salty, bitter, and cold in nature; it has a descending and purgative action, clearing heat, softening hard masses, and promoting bowel movements. Rhubarb is bitter and cold in nature; it is highly effective at purging the stomach and intestines, with a strong ability to clear heat and promote bowel movements. When combined, these two herbs enhance each other’s effects, clearing heat and eliminating stagnation, purging and breaking up accumulations, and strengthening the ability to promote bowel movements and remove hard masses. This combination is used for conditions involving real heat and food stagnation, as well as dry, hard stools.
2. Mirabilite combined with Pinellia: Mirabilite softens hard masses and promotes bowel movements; Pinellia dries dampness, transforms phlegm, disperses nodules, and relieves fullness. When combined, these two herbs not only disperse fullness caused by phlegm, fluid retention, and dampness but also direct the pathogenic factors downward, providing an outlet for their elimination. This combination is used for symptoms of fullness and distension under the ribs caused by the mutual entanglement of phlegm and dampness.
3. Mangxiao combined with Gansui: Mangxiao, salty and cold in nature, clears heat and flushes away damp-heat from the Triple Energizer and gastrointestinal tract; Gansui acts as a purgative to expel water, reduce swelling, and disperse masses. When combined, these two herbs break up masses, promote bowel movement, and expel water and fluid retention. This combination is used for symptoms such as fullness and pain from the epigastrium to the lower abdomen that is resistant to pressure, as well as constipation, caused by the mutual entanglement of water and heat.
4. Mangxiao combined with Areca nut and pumpkin seeds: Mangxiao acts as a laxative to relieve constipation; Areca nut and pumpkin seeds both serve as anthelmintics and laxatives. When used together, these three ingredients have the effect of eliminating parasites and relieving constipation, and are used to treat tapeworm infections.
Medicinal Identification
Mangxiao and Rhubarb: Both are potent laxatives that promote bowel movements, primarily treating conditions of excess heat and food stagnation, as well as severe constipation; when applied topically, they can also clear heat and reduce swelling, treating abscesses, sores, and toxic swellings. However,芒硝 is salty, bitter, and cold in nature. Among heat-clearing and laxative agents, it excels at moistening dryness and softening hardness, and is primarily used to treat conditions of excess heat and food stagnation characterized by dry, hard stools; when applied topically, it is effective for treating sore throat, mouth ulcers, red eyes, mastitis, and swollen, painful hemorrhoids.Rhubarb, on the other hand, is bitter and cold; it possesses a strong purgative action to eliminate food stagnation and is an essential herb for treating constipation caused by excess heat and food stagnation. At the same time, it can clear heat and purge fire, cool the blood and eliminate toxins, invigorate blood circulation and remove blood stasis, and drain dampness to alleviate jaundice. Therefore, it is also used to treat blood-heat-induced vomiting of blood and epistaxis, redness of the eyes and swelling of the throat, abscesses and carbuncles, intestinal abscesses with abdominal pain, amenorrhea due to blood stasis, postpartum blood stasis obstruction, trauma, damp-heat dysentery, jaundice with dark urine, dysuria, and edema.

Processing & Preparation
Harvesting & Processing
Dissolve naturally occurring芒硝 in water, filter, heat the filtrate to concentrate it, and allow it to cool until crystals precipitate; remove and air-dry. If the crystals are impure, repeat the process until pure芒硝 crystals are obtained.
Processing Methods
Wash and slice radishes, place them in a pot, add water, and boil until thoroughly cooked. Add芒硝 and continue boiling until completely dissolved. Remove from heat, filter out impurities and radish slices, and transfer the filtrate to a suitable container. After cooling,芒硝 will gradually precipitate; skim off the crystals. Concentrate the remaining liquid, allow it to cool, and recrystallize; skim off the crystals and air-dry them. For every 100 kg of sodium sulfate, use 20 kg of radishes and 200–300 L of water.
Storage Methods
Store in a dry, airtight container in a well-ventilated, dry place to protect from moisture; store at temperatures below 30°C.
