Commentary

Taking fresh cockscomb (Ji-guan-hua) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet, astringent flavor and neutral property: its action follows the Liver, Large Intestine meridians and works to stop bleeding. Honeysuckle (Jin-yin-hua) fills the deputy position; cold and sweet in character, it travels through the Lung, Heart, Stomach meridians to clear heat and remove toxins, disperse wind-heat. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Working as one, the formula clear heat and transforms dampness, thereby targeting the damp-heat and heat pattern that underlies the complaint.
