Commentary
Deer antler (Lu-rong) stands as the primary (chief) herb; warm and sweet, salty in character, it enters the Liver, Kidney meridians, working chiefly to tonify kidney yang, strengthen sinews and bones and enriches essence. Chinese yam (Shan-yao) takes the deputy (minister) role. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Spleen, Lung, Kidney meridians and works to tonify the spleen and lung, nourish the kidney and astringe essence. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Working as one, the formula nourish the kidneys and enhances virility, thereby targeting the yang deficiency and yang pattern that underlies the complaint.
