Commentary
Psoralea (Bu-gu-zhi) acts as the chief herb. Bitter, pungent-warm in property, it channels into the Kidney, Spleen meridians, and works to tonify kidney yang, secure essence, warm the spleen and stop diarrhea. Lotus seeds (Lian-zi) stand in the deputy (minister) seat; neutral and sweet, astringent in character, it travels through the Spleen, Kidney, Heart meridians to tonify the spleen, astringe the kidney and calm the spirit. Brown sugar (Hong-tang) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties.
