Commentary
Taking fresh Eupatorium (Pei-lan) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its pungent flavor and neutral property: its action follows the Spleen, Stomach, Lung meridians and works to resolve dampness, refresh the spleen and open the stomach. Red peony root (Chi-shao) serves as the deputy herb. Bitter-slightly cold in property, it enters the Liver meridians and works to clear heat, cool blood, activate blood to disperse stasis. Honey (Feng-mi) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. In sum, the prescription clear heat, cool the blood, stop bleeding, aimed squarely at the blood pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
