Commentary

Pork liver occupies the sovereign position; nature warm, flavor sweet, bitter, channeled into the Liver, it nourishes liver blood and brightens the eyes and becomes the guiding principle of the whole formula. These are joined ministerially by astragalus (nature slightly warm, flavor sweet, channeled into the Spleen, Lung, tonifies qi, raises yang, secures the exterior and promotes the discharge of pus), and egg (of neutral nature and sweet flavor, entering the Lung, Spleen, Stomach, nourishes yin, moistens dryness, calms the fetus, and tonifies deficiency), reinforcing the sovereign’s main effect. The combined effect is tailored to the qi-blood pattern.

with a distinctly warm cast, the formula may aggravate dryness-heat; those prone to oral ulcers or constipation should be cautious; those who are robust with internal accumulated heat are not suited to this formula; the warming-tonic nature is inadvisable during damp-heat, yin deficiency with fire, or episodes of exterior-heat
