Commentary
Astragalus (Huang-qi) serve as the monarch (chief) herb; slightly warm and sweet in character, it channels into the Spleen, Lung meridians, working chiefly to tonify qi, raise yang, secure the exterior and promote the discharge of pus. Cimicifuga (Sheng-ma) fills the deputy position, pungent, slightly sweet-slightly cold in property, acting through the Lung, Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine meridians to raise yang and lifts sinking qi, releases exterior and vents rashes. White sugar (Bai-tang) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to moisten and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Collectively, the combination tonify qi and raise yang, addressing the qi deficiency and qi pattern.
