Commentary
Dandelion (Pu-gong-ying) serves as the monarch (chief) herb. Bitter, sweet-cold in property, it enters the Liver, Stomach meridians, and works to clear heat, remove toxins, dissipate nodules and promote urination. Tangerine peel (Chen-pi) serves as the deputy herb. Pungent, bitter-warm in property, it enters the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to regulate qi and resolve phlegm. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. In sum, the prescription strengthen the spleen and promote the elimination of dampness, aimed squarely at the viral hepatitis pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
