Commentary
Taking black plum (Wu-mei) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its sour, astringent flavor and neutral property: it enters the Liver, Spleen, Lung, Large Intestine meridians and works to astringe the lung, check diarrhea, generate fluids and relieve pain. Wood Fragrance (Mu-xiang) fills the deputy position. Pungent, bitter-warm in property, it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Triple Burner, Gallbladder meridians and works to move qi, relieve pain and promote digestion. Ophiopogon (Mai-dong) adds further support, working to nourish yin and moisten the lung. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. The overall effect is to nourish the stomach, promote fluid production, regulate qi, relieve pain, restoring balance within the chronic gastritis framework.
