Formula

50 grams of raw rehmannia root, 250 grams of fresh lotus root, and 30 grams of honey.

How To Make

Wash the raw rehmannia root, slice it, and place it in a clay pot. Add water and decoct it twice, each time for 30 minutes. Combine the two decoctions, strain, and set aside. Wash the fresh lotus root, chop it finely, and place it in a juicer. Blend quickly to extract the juice, pour it into a cup, add the strained raw rehmannia decoction and honey, and mix thoroughly.

Efficacy

Nourishes yin, clears heat, and increases platelet count. Suitable for thrombocytopenic purpura of the yin deficiency with excessive heat pattern, characterized by numerous purpura lesions that are bright red in color and scattered in distribution; a prolonged course of the disease with intermittent flare-ups; frequent nosebleeds and bleeding gums; or accompanied by afternoon hot flashes, heat in the palms and soles, restlessness, dry mouth and thirst, palpitations and night sweats, dizziness and tinnitus, and mental fatigue and weakness;a red tongue with little or no coating and a dry surface, and a fine, rapid pulse.

Usage

Take one dose in the morning and one in the evening.

Commentary

Taking raw rehmannia root (Sheng-di) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet, bitter flavor and cold property: it enters the Heart, Liver, Kidney meridians and works to clear heat, cool blood, nourish yin and generate fluids. Fresh lotus root (Ou) takes the deputy (minister) role; cool and sweet in character, it travels through the Heart, Spleen, Stomach meridians to clear heat and generate fluids. Finally, honey (Feng-mi) serves as the envoy herb, harmonizing the whole; its role is to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs nourish yin, clear heat, increases platelet count, in keeping with the yin deficiency and yin pattern and its manifestations such as numerous purpura lesions that are bright red in color and scattered in distribution, a prolonged course of the disease with intermittent flare-ups.
