Commentary
Astragalus (Huang-qi) function as the chief herb. Sweet-slightly warm in property, its action follows the Spleen, Lung meridians, and works to tonify qi, raise yang, secure the exterior and promote the discharge of pus. Codonopsis (Dang-shen) stand in the deputy (minister) seat; neutral and sweet in character, it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians to tonify qi, strengthen the spleen and nourish the lung. Longan flesh (Long-yan-rou) reinforces this deputy action, working to tonify the heart and spleen, nourish blood and calm the spirit. Additionally, cane sugar (Bai-tang) takes an assisting (adjuvant) role, working to harmonize the formula. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. United, the ingredients tonify qi and lifts the stomach, addressing the root disturbance of the qi deficiency and qi pattern.
