Commentary
Each of Salvia miltiorrhiza and Paeonia rubra assumes the leading (chief) role, providing the main thrust of the formula. Milettia reticulata (Ji-xue-teng) serves as the deputy herb. Bitter, sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Liver, Spleen meridians and works to activate blood and unblock the collaterals. Taraxacum officinale lends further support to the chief action. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Working as one, the formula clear heat and detoxify, promote blood circulation and unblock the meridians, thereby targeting the heat pattern that underlies the complaint.
