Commentary
Each of Cassia seeds serve as the monarch (chief) herb, providing the main thrust of the formula. Hawthorn (Shan-zha) takes the deputy (minister) role. Sour, sweet-slightly warm in property, it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Liver meridians and works to dissolve food stagnation, activate blood and reduce stasis. Malt (Mai-ya) complements it, working to dissolve food stagnation and harmonize the middle. Lotus leaf (He-ye) adds as an assistant element, acting to clear summer heat, raise the clear yang and activate blood, thus refining the overall action. Finally, tea leaves (Cha-ye) act as the coordinating (envoy) herb; its role is to clear heat, refresh and aid digestion and coordinate the herbs. The overall effect is to promote weight loss and reduce blood lipids, dissipate blood stasis and calm the liver, restoring balance within the overweight & obesity framework.
