Commentary
Coptis (Huang-lian) function as the chief herb; cold and bitter in character, its action follows the Heart, Spleen, Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder, Large Intestine meridians, working chiefly to clear heat, dry dampness, purge fire and remove toxins. Scutellaria (Huang-qin) serves as the deputy herb, bitter-cold in property, acting through the Lung, Gallbladder, Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Small Intestine meridians to clear heat, dry dampness, purge fire, remove toxins and stop bleeding. Paeonia lends further support to the chief action. Among the assistants, Dong’e Ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) (nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung) while eggs (Ji-dan) (nourish yin, moisten dryness and tonify the body). Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Working as one, the formula clear heart heat, reduce internal fire, relieve restlessness, calm the mind, thereby targeting the insomnia pattern that underlies the complaint.
