Commentary

Codonopsis (Dang-shen) hold the chief position in this formula. Sweet-neutral in property, its action follows the Spleen, Lung meridians, and works to tonify qi, strengthen the spleen and nourish the lung. Atractylodes fill the deputy position. Chinese Yam (Shan-yao) complements it, working to tonify the spleen and lung, nourish the kidney and astringe essence. Cimicifuga (Sheng-ma) (raise yang and lifts sinking qi, releases exterior and vents rashes), joined by Calcined Dragon Bone (Duan Long-gu) (calm the spirit, settles fright and astringe), handle subsidiary symptoms and temper the main action. Finally, white sugar (Bai-tang) stands as the harmonizing envoy; its role is to moisten and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Working as one, the formula tonify qi and stop sweating, thereby targeting the qi deficiency and qi pattern that underlies the complaint.
