Commentary
Taking sea cucumber (Hai-shen) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its salty flavor and warm property: it travels through the Kidney, Heart meridians and works to tonify the kidney, enriches essence and moisten dryness. Dong’e ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) joins as the supporting deputy. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Liver, Kidney, Lung meridians and works to nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. In sum, the prescription nourish yin and replenishes blood, aimed squarely at the blood and qi pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
