Angelica, Astragalus, and Goji Berry Lamb Soup,From *Proven Tea, Decoction, and Soup Recipes for Common Ailments*,Nourishes qi and blood. Suitable for amenorrhea caused by deficiency of both qi and blood.
given the warm nature, caution is advised if the tongue is red with scant coating or there is tidal fever and night sweats; in the absence of frank deficiency, or where an excess or heat pattern prevails, indiscriminate warming tonic use is inadvisable; the blood-moving action suggests caution in early pregnancy, in heavy or prolonged menses, and in those with a bleeding tendency; warming tonics readily stir heat and burden the spleen; caution is advised where dampness-heat or food stagnation accumulates in the middle
Commentary
The sovereign is angelica root, of warm nature and sweet, pungent flavor, entering the Liver, Heart, Spleen; it tonifies blood, promotes blood circulation, regulates menstruation, and moistens the intestines, anchoring the central strategy of the formula. These are joined ministerially by astragalus (with slightly warm nature and sweet flavor, having Spleen, Lung tropism, tonifies qi, raises yang, secures the exterior and promotes the discharge of pus), and goji berries (neutral in nature and sweet in flavor, with Liver, Kidney tropism, nourishes the liver and kidney, and brightens the eyes), reinforcing the sovereign’s main effect. Finished with lamb, rich in blood-and-flesh essence, nourishing the righteous qi, the formula attains a regulated, neither-excess nor-deficient balance. The combined effect is tailored to the qi-blood pattern.
