Drug Formulation

1 jin aged tangerine peel (white pith removed, finely ground), 6 liang Cinnamomum cassia (bark removed, finely ground), 6 liang dried ginger (roasted, finely ground), 6 liang Sichuan angelica (roasted, finely ground), 6 liang Acorus tatarinowii (roasted, pounded and sifted), 6 liang Aconite root (roasted, skin and navel removed, pounded and sifted),6 liang of Smilax glabra (ground with a mortar and pestle), 6 liang of Shenqu, 1 liang of Aconite (roasted, boiled in water for 3–5 boils), 1 liang of Wood Fragrance, 1 liang of Sichuan Pepper (seeds removed, stir-fried until perspiring), 4 liang of Barley Malt, and Magnolia Bark (peeled, roasted with ginger juice; the above 6 ingredients are ground separately with a mortar and pestle, reserving half a liang of malt powder).

Processing

Add 4 sheng of high-quality, ash-free wine to the above ingredients. First, decoct the first 4 ingredients for a duration equivalent to a person walking 10 li; then add the next 3 ingredients and decoct for another duration equivalent to a person walking 10 li; next, add the remaining 6 ingredients and another 2 bowls of wine, decocting until a thick paste forms. Remove from heat, mix thoroughly with the reserved barley malt powder, and pound 1,000 times to form pills the size of a paulownia seed.

Instructions for Use

To prepare this decoction, a silver or stone sand pot is ideal. If unavailable, use a well-seasoned cast-iron pot; scrub it clean and wash away all grease. First, coat the pot with pure ghee, then add wine, followed by the herbs. Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly with a silver spoon until it becomes paste-like. Remove from heat, spread evenly on a clean tray, and allow to set to the desired consistency. Pound thoroughly, then roll into pills by hand and sun-dry.Take 20–30 pills daily on an empty stomach, washed down with either tea or wine, and take another dose at noon.
