Processing
Take one large winter radish and carve it into a container at least one finger thick, with a depth sufficient to hold the medicine; if a large radish is not available, use only one-third of the cinnabar.Finely grind the realgar, myrrh, and cinnabar; separately pound the remaining herbs into a fine powder. Mix them evenly in a sieve, then place the mixture into the radish container. First, use a solution of red ochre to seal the seams of the container. Externally, apply a mixture of 6 fen of “Liu Yi” clay and 1 fen of glue-mixed clay, reinforced with paper fibers, to a thickness of one finger. Place the clay-covered container on a brick and allow it to dry to 5 fen of its original moisture content by midday;Calcine 3 jin of charcoal. Leave a small hole in the box; use a bamboo strip to test for heat, waiting until the radish is fully cooked. Once steam escapes from the hole, the clay is dry, and the radish is cooked, remove the fire. After about half the time it takes to cook a pot of rice, add another 1–2 jin of fuel. Carefully monitor the heat—do not let the radish char, as this may ruin the medicine. The sign of readiness is when the clay turns slightly yellow and is fully cooked;Allow the medicinal properties to permeate; then crack open the clay, cut the radish in half, and remove it. The elixir will be soft, cohesive, and fragrant; quickly roll it into pills the size of peas.
