From *Formulas of the Imperial Pharmacy*, Volume 5.

Processing

Wash once in hot water, remove the navel, lightly roast until dry, then wash again; repeat this process seven times. Soak in concentrated rice washing water for one day and one night, then remove and drain thoroughly. For every 1 liang of Pinellia, use 1.5 liang of white alum (finely ground), dissolved in warm water to soak the Pinellia. Keep the water level about two fingers’ width above the Pinellia, stirring frequently. In winter, place the mixture in a warm location all at once and soak for five days and nights; then remove and lightly roast until dry.Dissolve 1 qian of lead white in warm water and soak the Pinellia for another day and night. After a total of 7 days, remove it. Then, simmer the Pinellia in whey over low heat—do not allow it to boil—until the whey is extremely hot. Remove, let dry, and store in a silver or porcelain container.
