Commentary
Taking Chuanxiong (Chuan-xiong) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its pungent flavor and warm property: its action follows the Liver, Gallbladder, Pericardium meridians and works to activate blood, move qi, dispel wind and relieve pain. White chrysanthemum flowers (Ju-hua) act as the deputy ingredient. Sweet, bitter-slightly cold in property, it enters the Lung, Liver meridians and works to clear liver heat, pacify the liver and brighten the eyes. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. In sum, the prescription dispel wind and clear heat, unblock the meridians and relieve pain, aimed squarely at the wind-heat and heat pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
