10 g Cimicifuga, 10 g Bupleurum, 20 g dandelion, 50 g sugarcane.

How To Make

Wash the sugarcane and juice it; set aside. Wash the Cimicifuga, Bupleurum, and dandelion, place them in a pot, add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain out the solids, retain the liquid, and mix in the sugarcane juice to complete the preparation.

Efficacy

This formula tonifies qi and raises yang, soothes the liver and harmonizes the stomach, and clears heat while nourishing the stomach. It is suitable for gastric ptosis caused by qi stagnation and internal damp-heat.

Usage

Drink in three divided doses daily.

Commentary

Cimicifuga (Sheng-ma) functions as the chief herb. Pungent, slightly sweet-slightly cold in property, it travels through the Lung, Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine meridians, and works to raise yang and lifts sinking qi, releases exterior and vents rashes. Bupleurum (Chai-hu) joins as the supporting deputy. Bitter, pungent-slightly cold in property, it enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Lung meridians and works to soothe the liver, raise yang and disperse exterior heat. Dandelion (Pu-gong-ying) reinforces this deputy action, working to clear heat, remove toxins, dissipate nodules and promote urination. Assisting the core, sugarcane (Gan-zhe) takes an assisting (adjuvant) role, helping to clear heat, generate fluids and relieve thirst. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Taken together these herbs this formula tonifies qi and raise yang, soothe the liver and harmonize the stomach, clear heat while nourishing the stomach. It is, in keeping with the damp-heat and qi pattern.
