Commentary
Each of lotus seeds function as the chief herb, providing the main thrust of the formula. Euryale seeds serve as the deputy herb. Sweet, astringent-neutral in property, it enters the Spleen, Kidney meridians and works to astringe, tonify the kidney and check diarrhea. Chinese yam (Shan-yao) complements it, working to tonify the spleen and lung, nourish the kidney and astringe essence. Coix seeds (Yi-yi-ren) serve as a supporting (assistant) herb, acting to clear damp-heat, strengthen the spleen and relieve impediment, thus refining the overall action. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. The overall effect is to nourish the spleen and stomach, restoring balance within the chronic diarrhea framework.
