Phlegm-Flushing Powder,In pediatric cases of Shanghan, the condition initially arises from persistent high fever that does not subside. After treatment with decoctions or pills, the child may exhibit a stiff neck, rolling eyes, tongue-protrusion, and weak convulsions, resembling an epileptic seizure. Over time, the child may experience choking and be unable to cry. Physicians often mistake this for “startle wind” and repeatedly administer cinnabar, mercury, ox bile, mercury powder, croton seed, and bamboo sap; however, none of these medications prove effective.This is caused by toxic qi accumulating in the heart and chest following erroneous purgation; internal heat generates phlegm, which coats the various medicines, preventing them from circulating effectively.
