Cinnamon Twig (Gui-zhi) takes the deputy (minister) role. Pungent, sweet-warm in property, it enters the Heart, Lung, Bladder meridians and works to releases the exterior, warm the channels and free yang. Dried Tangerine Peel (Chen-pi) adds further support, working to regulate qi, strengthen the spleen, dry dampness and dissolve phlegm. Honey (Feng-mi) acts as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. Working as one, the formula warm the stomach, dispel cold, relieve pain, thereby targeting the cold pattern that underlies the complaint.
