Commentary
Garlic cloves (Da-suan) hold the chief position in this formula. Pungent-warm in property, it enters the Spley, Stomach, Lung meridians, and works to warm the middle and remove toxins. Poria (Fu-ling) joins as the supporting deputy, sweet, bland-neutral in property, acting through the Heart, Lung, Spleen, Kidney meridians to drain dampness, strengthen the spleen and calm the spirit. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. The overall effect is to cleanse the intestines, kills bacteria, strengthen the spleen, promote the elimination of dampness, restoring balance within the chronic diarrhea framework.
