Codonopsis (Dang-shen) stand in the deputy (minister) seat; neutral and sweet in character, it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians to tonify qi, strengthen the spleen and nourish the lung. Longan flesh (Long-yan-rou) reinforces this deputy action, working to tonify the heart and spleen, nourish blood and calm the spirit. Additionally, cane sugar (Bai-tang) takes an assisting (adjuvant) role, working to harmonize the formula.
