Commentary
Hawthorn (Shan-zha) functions as the chief herb. Sour, sweet-slightly warm in property, it channels into the Spleen, Stomach, Liver meridians, and works to dissolve food stagnation, activate blood and reduce stasis. Ginger (Sheng-jiang) fills the deputy position. Pungent-warm in property, it enters the Lung, Spleen, Stomach meridians and works to disperse cold, relieve cough and harmonize the stomach. Jujubes (Da-zao) round out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to tonify qi, nourish blood and calm the spirit, harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Taken together these herbs promote blood circulation and dispel blood stasis, warm the meridians and relieve pain, regulate qi and alleviate stagnation, in keeping with the dysmenorrhea pattern.
