Commentary
Poria (Fu-ling) assumes the leading (chief) role; neutral and sweet, bland in character, it channels into the Heart, Lung, Spleen, Kidney meridians, working chiefly to drain dampness, strengthen the spleen and calm the spirit. Sour jujube seeds (Suan-zao-ren) take the deputy (minister) role; neutral and sweet, sour in character, it travels through the Liver, Gallbladder, Heart meridians to nourish the heart, calm the spirit, astringe sweat and generate fluids. Finally, white sugar (Bai-tang) stands as the harmonizing envoy; its role is to moisten and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs nourish the heart and spleen, in keeping with the heart and spleen pattern and its manifestations such as deficiency of both the heart and spleen.
