Commentary
Taking fresh tangerine peel (Chen-pi) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its pungent, bitter flavor and warm property: it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to regulate qi and resolve phlegm. Fresh hawthorn (Shan-zha) serves as the deputy herb; slightly warm and sour, sweet in character, it travels through the Spleen, Stomach, Liver meridians to dissolve food stagnation and activate blood. Honey (Feng-mi) rounds out the formula as the harmonizing herb, working to moisten the lung and harmonize the formula and moderate the overall properties. Working as one, the formula promote the flow of qi and blood and soften blood vessels, thereby targeting the blood and qi pattern that underlies the complaint.
