Indications

Roasted jujube seeds are primarily used to treat insomnia, palpitations, and frequent dreaming, as well as conditions such as spontaneous sweating and night sweats caused by physical weakness.

Usage and Dosage

Clinically, Roasted Jujube Seeds are commonly prepared by decocting them into a herbal decoction; the standard dosage is 10–15 g. They may also be ground into powder and taken orally at a dose of 1–1.5 g per serving. It is important to note that due to differences in each patient’s condition and constitution, the specific dosage of Roasted Jujube Seeds may vary from person to person. Patients should strictly adhere to the dosage prescribed by their physician.

Precautions

1. Roasted jujube seeds have a moist and slippery nature; therefore, individuals with loose stools should not take large amounts of this herb alone. 2. If you need to take other medications while using roasted jujube seeds, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Do not take other medications on your own to avoid drug interactions that could affect efficacy or increase the risk of adverse reactions. 3. While taking roasted jujube seeds, avoid spicy and greasy foods (such as chili peppers, fried foods, and fatty meats) as much as possible to prevent interference with the treatment’s effectiveness. 4. Before using roasted jujube seeds, a TCM practitioner must conduct a pattern differentiation to avoid blind use without proper diagnosis. During treatment, follow the principle of “discontinuing treatment once the condition is resolved.” If symptoms improve, schedule a follow-up visit promptly so that the practitioner can assess your condition and adjust the dosage or discontinue the medication to ensure treatment safety and efficacy.

Chemical Constituents

Sour jujube seeds primarily contain triterpene saponins, such as sour jujube seed saponins A and B; alkaloids, such as lotus leaf alkaloid, rhamnopyrrolidine, proto-lotus leaf alkaloid, norisovioletine, and dextro-Hengzhou wuyao alkaloid; and flavonoids, such as spinoside and dangyaoside. In addition, it contains volatile oils, sugars, proteins, and organic acids. Roasted Ziziphus jujuba seeds are produced by roasting Ziziphus jujuba seeds. According to modern data, no significant differences in the types of chemical constituents have been found in Ziziphus jujuba seeds after roasting. However, some studies have reported that the content of certain constituents has changed to some extent, specifically showing an increase in the content of Ziziphus jujuba seed saponins A and B.

2. *Compendium of Materia Medica*: “Sour jujube seeds are sweet and moisturizing; therefore, when used in their roasted form, they treat symptoms of gallbladder deficiency such as insomnia, restlessness, thirst, and spontaneous sweating; when used raw, they treat gallbladder heat characterized by excessive sleepiness. Both are effective remedies for the Jueyin and Shaoyang meridians; however, people today mistakenly regard them solely as remedies for the heart, thereby failing to grasp this principle.”

Applications

Clinical Applications

Clinically, roasted sour jujube seeds can be used to treat conditions such as neurasthenia, menopausal syndrome, and night sweats.

Related Compatibility

Roasted jujube seeds can be combined with other Chinese herbal ingredients, such as bi zi ren and floating wheat, to treat related conditions.

1. Roasted jujube seeds combined with bi zi ren: Roasted jujube seeds are sweet and sour in taste, neutral in nature, and enter the Heart, Liver, and Gallbladder meridians; they are effective at nourishing the heart, calming the spirit, and reducing sweating. Bi zi ren is sweet and neutral in nature, with a moist quality; it enters the Heart, Kidney, and Large Intestine meridians and excels at nourishing the blood, calming the spirit, moistening the intestines, and promoting bowel movements. When used together, the effects of nourishing the heart and calming the spirit are enhanced; this combination is commonly used to treat palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia caused by deficiency of heart blood.

2. Roasted jujube seeds combined with floating wheat:Roasted jujube seeds are sweet, sour, and neutral in nature; they can both nourish heart blood and calm the mind, as well as consolidate heart fluids and stop spontaneous sweating. Floating wheat is sweet and cool; its dried, floating form is light and excels at moving to the exterior to stop sweating, thereby eliminating deficiency heat and bone-steaming fever. When used in combination, the efficacy of nourishing the heart and consolidating sweat is enhanced, and this pairing is often used to treat spontaneous sweating and night sweats caused by internally generated deficiency heat and the leakage of heart fluids.

Medicinal Identification

Roasted jujube seeds must be distinguished from raw jujube seeds. Both are different processed forms of jujube seeds; due to differences in processing methods, their therapeutic effects also differ in emphasis.Raw jujube seeds nourish the heart and liver, calm the mind and soothe the spirit, reduce sweating, and promote fluid production; they are commonly used to treat restlessness and insomnia due to deficiency, palpitations and frequent dreaming, excessive sweating due to physical weakness, and thirst caused by fluid depletion. Roasted jujube seeds, on the other hand, have their seed coats cracked open, making them easier to grind and decoct. Their effects are similar to those of raw jujube seeds, but their ability to nourish the heart and soothe the spirit is stronger than that of raw jujube seeds.

Seeds sown in spring must undergo sand storage treatment and be planted after the ground thaws; fall sowing takes place in mid- to late October. Dig furrows 33 cm apart and 7–10 cm deep; sow one seed every 7–10 cm, cover with 2–3 cm of soil, and water to maintain moisture.Seedlings can be transplanted after 1–2 years of growth. Dig planting holes measuring (2–3) m × 1 m, each 30 cm deep and wide. Plant one seedling per hole, then mound soil around the base, tamp it down firmly, and water thoroughly.

2. Propagation by Division: Before bud break in spring and after leaf fall in autumn, cut off the new shoots that have emerged from the base of mature plants, taking them along with their roots, and plant them using the same method as for transplanting.
