Commentary
Dried tangerine peel (Chen-pi) acts as the chief herb. Pungent, bitter-warm in property, its action follows the Spleen, Lung meridians, and works to regulate qi, strengthen the spleen, dry dampness and dissolve phlegm. Chrysanthemum flowers (Ju-hua) join as the supporting deputy; slightly cold and sweet, bitter in character, it travels through the Lung, Liver meridians to disperse wind-heat, pacify the liver and brighten the eyes. Green tea (Lu-cha) rounds out the formula as the envoy herb, working to clear heat, resolve dampness and refresh the mind and moderate the overall properties. The overall effect is to promote the flow of qi, relieve bloating, harmonize the middle burner, stimulate the appetite, restoring balance within the liver qi and qi framework.
