Commentary
Taking American ginseng (Xi-yang-shen) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its sweet, slightly bitter flavor and cool property: it travels through the Heart, Lung, Kidney meridians and works to tonify qi, nourish yin and clear heat, generate fluids. Notoginseng (San-qi) stands in the deputy (minister) seat. Sweet, slightly bitter-warm in property, it enters the Liver, Stomach meridians and works to activate blood, resolve stasis and stop bleeding. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. Taken together these herbs tonify qi and nourish yin, promote blood circulation and dispel blood stasis, in keeping with the qi deficiency and yin deficiency pattern.
