Commentary
Hawthorn (Shan-zha) acts as the chief herb; slightly warm and sour, sweet in character, it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Liver meridians, working chiefly to dissolve food stagnation, activate blood and reduce stasis. Motherwort (Yi-mu-cao) joins as the supporting deputy, bitter, pungent-slightly cold in property, acting through the Liver, Heart, Bladder meridians to activate blood, regulate menstruation, promote urination and remove toxins. Tea leaves (Cha-ye) act as the coordinating (envoy) herb, working to clear heat, refresh and aid digestion and unite the separate actions into one. The overall effect is to promote blood circulation, dispel blood stasis, aid digestion, promote diuresis, restoring balance within the coronary artery disease framework.
