Commentary
Dong’e Ejiao (Dong-e E-jiao) assumes the leading (chief) role; neutral and sweet in character, it travels through the Liver, Kidney, Lung meridians, working chiefly to nourish blood, stop bleeding and moisten the lung. Eggs (Ji-dan) join as the supporting deputy. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Heart, Kidney meridians and works to nourish yin, moisten dryness and tonify the body. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. Taken together these herbs nourish and replenishes blood, supplements iron, in keeping with the blood and qi pattern.
